Hospital da Luz Lisboa performed, last January 12, the first PIPAC chemotherapy procedure (Pressurized Intra Peritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy). Now available at Hospital da Luz Lisboa, the PIPAC is an innovating treatment and a great added value in the oncologic treatment of patients with advanced tumours. Carried out by a team coordinated by surgeons Diogo Albergaria and Susana Ourô , this procedure of minimally invasive surgery implied a multidisciplinary approach, with the collaboration of oncologist Fábio Cassiano Lopes . The procedure counted with the presence of Marc Pocard, from Hôpital Lariboisière, Paris, with whom Diogo Albergaria took specific training in peritoneal surgery. The PIPAC: Consists in the application of pressurized aerosolized chemotherapy to the peritoneal cavity, allowing a more homogeneous and concentrated distribution of the drug; Is applied through minimally invasive surgery; Is indicated for the treatment of patients in palliative context; Improves the quality of life of patients and delays the progression of intra-abdominal oncologic disease; Is presently being tested in several international clinical trials, for the treatment of gastrointestinal neoplasms (stomach, colon, etc.) and gynaecologic neoplasms (ovary), aiming to develop a curative surgery.
