Hospital da Luz ensured, once again, the clinical assistance to EDP Lisbon Half-Marathon and Vodafone 10k Run, which took place last Sunday, March 17. The 33 rd edition counted with the participation of over 30 thousand athletes, 10 thousand of which internationals, besides 150 collaborators of Luz Saúde. The female presence has been increasing year after year, reaching 41% this year. As well as the elite group, all athletes started in Ponte 25 de Abril, running their respective distances – 21 km and 10 km – to the finishing line, near Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, in Belém. The clinical assistance was ensured by around 142 health professionals, among doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and emergency technicians, supported by 22 ambulances and 14 motorcycles with the respective medical staff and also 12 bicycles. Athletes were assisted in the main medical centre set up near the finish line and in the four advanced medical posts along the course. Physicians, nurses and emergency technicians also carried out an initial screening at the finish line, to those athletes showing heavier signs of effort. Overall, 325 participants were assisted during the event. Pedro Sturken and Ana Garcia Martins prepared for the event in our Sports Medicine Centre This year, besides Lu presence, the already well-known Hospital da Luz mascot, who cheered near the finishing line, the Hospital da Luz Sports Medicine Centre helped preparing the participation of two influencers, athlete and trainer Pedro Sturken, and Ana Garcia Martins (known on social media as “A Pipoca Mais Doce”). Both had the opportunity to take previously, at the Sports Medicine Centre , several sport exercise and performance exams, namely gait assessment, technical movement and isokinetic, monitored by physiologists and specialized physiotherapists. Both Ana Garcia Martins and Pedro Sturken gave their testimony in video (reel) about the exams carried out, on their respective Instagram profiles. At the end of the run they participated on – the Vodafone 10k –, they also took the opportunity to express that the preparation carried out at Hospital da Luz helped them realize the importance of what should be done by anyone intending to practice sports more intensively and reach particular goals. In Sturken’s case, the goal was to complete the 10 km under 50 minutes, which he did: 46 minutes and 35 seconds. This partnership of medical assistance with the EDP Lisbon Half-Marathon is part of the continuing bet of Hospital da Luz on Sports Medicine, as demonstrated by its support to over 60 clubs, associations, events and athletes, at national level. These sport partnerships are for Hospital da Luz an excellent way to fulfil its mission of promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing disease, which inevitably includes the practice of physical exercise.
